Author Stephen Markley’s sprawling new novel The Deluge tracks dozens of characters over the course of decades, from the 2010s out past 2040, everyone from climate activists to scientists to political operatives, as they suffer the effects of climate change and struggle to marshal the political will to address it. I caught up with him at a recent book event.
Hi David, Thank you for recommending this book. I just finished it. It's quite the roller coaster of emotions. With that said, I really didn't like the idea ruminants can be taken completely out of the food system. Sure get rid of CAFOs but ruminants are extremely important for soil health, they're also the only way to make food from range land and as the book illustrated well, we will have major food issues in the future with food scarcity. Is it wise to discard a nutrient dense food source at this time?
Thanks, David, for flagging Stephen's books. I just order The Deluge and Ohio. Can't wait to dig into them...and to listen to your conversation with him!!!
Hey Dave, there were a couple of book recs from Stephen—I couldn’t track one of them (the author was Lisa ____ , in the audience)—title was “The Weavers”?
Believers: Making a Life at the End of the World by Lisa Wells (this is the one that the author said made him feel what he's "supposed to feel right now in the midst of this")
The Big Fix: Seven Practical Steps to Save Our Planet by Hal Harvey
I ordered The Deluge and I got two chapters in when my teenager snagged it. I had mentioned Stephen King's praise for the book. He's a fan. I think he thought I got it for him.
So glad you were able to record this! I'm already about half way through the book and it's absolutely remarkable. No spoilers in the pod, right?!
Hmm... no specific spoilers, no.
